What this map does, and what it doesn't

Most interactive USA maps are state-colouring tools: you click Texas, it turns blue, you fill in a legend. This isn't one of those. There are no clickable state shapes to select and there's no choropleth legend.

What you get instead is a real map — streets, labels and satellite imagery under your annotations — that you can mark up anywhere in the country. That's the better tool when your locations are addresses rather than states: offices, stores, warehouses, job sites, service areas, delivery zones.

Working at country scale

A few things to know before you map the whole United States of America.

The country covers six time zones. Four span the mainland — Eastern through New York and Florida, Central through Texas and Louisiana, Mountain through Colorado and Wyoming, Pacific through California — and Alaska and Hawaii each have their own. Arizona and Hawaii don't observe daylight saving, so the gap between them and the rest of the country shifts twice a year. If your map is about coverage or dispatch, that matters more than distance does.

Distances are bigger than they look. New York to Los Angeles is about 2,800 miles of driving, or four days. Inside a single state, El Paso is closer to San Diego than it is to Houston. Territory maps drawn to look tidy often aren't drivable.

Alaska and Hawaii break the frame. Alaska is about two and a half times the size of Texas and sits far northwest of the mainland; Hawaii is 2,400 miles out in the Pacific. Zoom out far enough to include both and the lower 48 shrink to a strip. Most people make a main map for the mainland and separate views for the other two.

Washington, D.C. isn't a state. It's a small district between Maryland and Virginia, easy to miss when you're dividing the country up and one of the most common gaps in a territory map.

What people map at this scale

• Sales territories — one region per rep, drawn as shapes instead of a spreadsheet of assigned states. Useful when a territory splits a state, which most do.
• Store and dealer locations — every pin in one view, so gaps show up. A cluster in Michigan and Minnesota with nothing in Nebraska or Kansas is obvious on a map and invisible in a list.
• Service and delivery areas — outline where you actually go, including the parts of a state you don't cover.
• Field team routes — a line between stops to see how a week actually runs.
• Events and conferences — a year of dates across the country on one shareable map.
• Site selection — existing locations plus the ones you're considering, side by side.

A few tips

Start zoomed out to frame the whole country, then zoom in to place each pin precisely — search by address rather than clicking, since a pin that looks right at national scale can land a county away. Label as you go; twenty unlabelled pins in Tennessee and Alabama stop meaning anything by the end. And keep colours to three or four, one per category, so the map reads at a glance.
