How to Use the Map

1. Zoom to your area. Scroll or pinch to zoom, and drag the map with the hand tool. Each logo is one warehouse; zoom into a dense metro like Phoenix or San Jose and the cluster separates into individual Costco stores.
2. Draw a driving radius. Use the circle tool around your home to see which locations fall within a reasonable drive. In San Jose that circle might catch half a dozen stores — in Montana, none.
3. Sketch a route. The line tool lets you trace a trip and spot the Costco locations along the way.
4. Mark it up. Drop a pin on your house, add text or an emoji to label your regular store, and point things out with arrows. Pick a color with the color picker and use the eraser to undo any drawing.

Where Costco Stores Are Concentrated

Costco Wholesale Corporation opened its first warehouse in Seattle, Washington, in 1983. It now runs more than 900 Costco warehouses worldwide, roughly 650 of them in the U.S. Zoom out and the pattern is obvious: coverage follows population and income density, which is why the West Coast — California above all — looks so crowded.

California has far more Costco stores than any other state, around 145, or a fifth of the U.S. total, clustered around Los Angeles, San Diego and the Bay Area. Texas is a distant second, and Washington, the company's home state, is dense for its size. Florida and Arizona are well covered too; metro Phoenix alone has about 20 warehouses. In Colorado, most sit along the Front Range between Denver and Colorado Springs, with the rest of the state largely empty.

On the East Coast, locations track the population corridor through New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts. Illinois, Michigan and Minnesota anchor the Midwest, while Georgia and South Carolina cover the Southeast and Oregon and Nevada round out the West. At the thin end: Montana, South Dakota and Mississippi have only a handful of stores each, and Alaska's six are split between Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau.

The Three States Without a Costco

West Virginia, Rhode Island and Wyoming still have no Costco at all — mostly a question of population density and distribution economics. Shoppers there cross state lines: Rhode Islanders drive into Massachusetts or Connecticut, Wyoming members head to Montana, Colorado or Utah, and West Virginians use stores in Ohio, Pennsylvania or Virginia.

Warehouses, Business Centers and Services

Not every Costco location offers the same things. Most warehouses have a pharmacy, an optical department and a hearing aid center, and many have a gas station — but services vary store to store. Costco also runs close to 30 Business Centers, stocked with commercial-grade and bulk goods for restaurants, offices and other small businesses. Any member can shop a business center, though they skip the pharmacy, optical and food court. Before driving out, check that specific location's page on Costco.com for current hours and services.
